The museum library is accessible to the public free of charge and is located adjacent to the museum’s foyer. Since 1908 it has been collecting and making available specialist literature from the fields of art and cultural studies. Today the inventory comprises over 135,000 items, relating to works of art in the collection and the museum’s temporary exhibitions.
The library makes its resources available for use onsite in the reading room, but loans are not permitted. Items from the repository can quickly be made available in the reading room upon request, provided they are not subject to any restrictions due to their condition or value. An extensive range of current art journals, works of reference and artist monographs are available to visitors for immediate use in the reading room. Internet connectivity is available via our WLAN hotspot. The library’s catalogue can also be researched online via the LWL library portal.
