Private Photographs in War
Photography gave the front events a face and kept the connection to family and friends alive. A new type of photography evolved. In the studios at home farewell photos were created. In addition to the field Photographers officially employed by the military many photojournalists traveled on their own in war zones. The photograph experienced by the war an upswing.
It is interesting in this context how the families at home have dealt with the photos. In the collection of the LWL-Open-Air Museum Detmold several examples of the culture of remembrance can be found. You could see special photo albums, so-called "war albums", memorial cards or the memory of the war dead in the living room.
