The Nightingale Colliery in Witten The oldest deep mine on the Ruhr

Situated in the Muttental valley, the former Nightingale colliery is a witness to early coal mining in the Ruhr region. This colliery evolved from a small pit first mentioned in 1714. During the nineteenth century the switch was made from drift to deep mining and before long steam engines were being used to pump water and to transport coal to the surface.
One of the oldest steam engines in the Ruhr coalfield can be found in the machine house and will shortly be in function again.
The Westphalian Industrial Museum will inform visitors to the Nightingale colliery about the formation of coal seams, developments in mining in the Ruhr valley and the work and domestic conditions of miners over 150 years ago. In the exhibition "Zeche Eimerweise" (Coal Scuttle Pit) the history of smallscale mining on the Ruhr after 1945 will be shown. Coal transport on the Ruhr river will be shown onboard a replica of a "Ruhrnachen" - a typical Ruhr barge from 1840.
