The industry of brick production was, as almost no other branch of industry, the basis for the rapid growth of towns and cities in the 19 th century. For a long period of time the brick industry guaranteed work and a steady income for a lot of workers, but te living conditions were har to endure. From March until October brickmakers from the principality of Lippe workd as traveling brickmakers in many brickfields in northern and eastern Germany as wekk as ub tge Ruhr Valley, fay away from theri home. The social history of these people as well as the history of brickmaking are the central subjects of the Westphalian Industrial Museum Zieglei Lage ("Brickworks Lage"). the core part of the museum is a brickworks from the early 20th century, which is sited on the northrn outskirts of the town of Lage and is nowadays classified as a site of historical importande and moinument of the industrial development of this region.

Today the Ziegelei Lage invites its visitors to be discoverers, to experiment or just take part in its offered activities, e. g. visitors can produce their own bricks.
