Outstanding and unique fossils have been saved from destruction by the LWL-Museum of Natural History since 1980.
In most German states paleontological objects are protected by law. That is also the case in North-Rhine-Westphalia. According to preservation laws in the state animal and plant relicts of geological eras, that means fossils, can be preserved as ground monuments since 1980. Ever since, the LWL-Museum of Natural History in Münster has assumed the job of paleontological ground monument preservation in Westphalia-Lippe.
