Foreign Impulses - Architectural Heritage of the Ruhr Area is a project of the State Services for Historical Monuments and the industry museums of LVR and LWL as part of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 initiative. The Ruhr area is, or has been, associated with practically every state in Europe: Westphalia-Rhineland-Hessen-Lothringen-Belgium-TheNetherlands-France-Ireland-
England-Austria-Poland-Italy-Portugal-Spain-Turkey-Greece-
Russia, and many more.

Foreign Impulses tells a story of change and continuity, immigration and exchange, and foreign influences on art and architectural styles, beliefs and governance, people, assets and technology in the deeply rooted history of this region. There are around 10,000 architectural monuments in the Ruhr, many of which date back to pre-industrial times. In the 19th and 20th centuries in particular, the Ruhr was shaped primarily by changing relationships, which have remained its distinguishing characteristic since this time.

The Foreign Impulses project focuses on a selection of architectural monuments that embody the historical depth and frequent changes in the region. The time span covers preserved artefacts from Roman times to the occasionally futuristic administration buildings of the modern era. People from all over the world bring “foreign impulses” with them. They come to the Ruhr region to live, to work, and to study. The forays of the “Foreign Impulses - Architectural Heritage of the Ruhr Area” project portray the diverse phenomena of this region.
