Das LWL-Freilichtmuseum Hagen bringt ein Stück Handwerksgeschichte in die Gegenwart - zum Anfassen!
Denn auf dem ca. 42 ha grossen Gelände werden die Werkstätten und das Werkzeug des städtischen und ländlichen Handwerks nicht einfach nur "ausgestellt". In mehr als zwanzig der nahezu sechzig wiederaufgebauten oder rekonstruierten Werkstätten wird produziert. Die interessierten Besucher können den Fertigungsprozess beobachten, die Museumsvorführer befragen und zum Teil sogar selbst bei der Produktion mitanfassen.

To discover moments of technical history; to experience reasonably reproduced manufacturing techniques and working conditions of the past: this is the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe’s open air Museum in Hagen.
It is Europe’s sole open air museum devoted to the history of handicraft and technique. Located within the scenic valley Mäckingerbachtal, it shows industrial undertakings as they were existent in the area of Westphalia-Lippe from the 18th century to the present. The scope reaches from metal processing to food production, to paper production, to book printing.
Blazing forges, banging hammers, squeaking driving belts, bustling activity: The LWL-Freilichtmuseum is a lively place. Historical working techniques can be experienced closely in many workshops. How to forge nails or scythes, roll cigars, squeeze oil, carve spoons or pound ropes is vividly shown on the site. Hence, unheard of or forgotten techniques and working conditions are more easily to understand.
The historical workshops constitute the source for questions about the historical developments of handicraft and technique, and economical, social and regional contexts. What is the consequence of technical changes for our society and environment? Permanent and special exhibitions transfer the evidence of old techniques and past living conditions into a new framework. Their past and present relevance is shown. New perspectives on personal life styles, the big and small stories are revealed.
Hagen’s open air museum is a place for encounter and communication. As well as guided tours in English and French regarding the history of handicraft and technique in the area of Westphalia Lippe, many accompanying detailed programs are offered to all visitors and age groups. Discover a “Blaues Wunder” (shock of one’s life) and learn about couching and forming metal.

60 historical workshops and businesses, creeks, embankment ponds, meadows, hills and forests: the LWL-Freilichtmuseum Hagen is a diverse place and has a lot to offer to its various visitors.
Special activities and large festivities suitable for the entire family complete the program offered and illustrate the Mäckingerbachtal in a new light over and over again. Many of the handmade products from the museum workshops are sold in the museum shops. Homemade beer, smoked meat or delicious bread of the historical Schanzen-Oven can be sampled locally. In addition, the museum-restaurant “Haus Letmathe” offers a large and fresh choice of typical Westphalian specialities.
