In addition to the re-erection, maintenance and presentation of historical buildings, the LWL Open-Air Museum in Detmold has set up a comprehensive collection of historical everyday items that is unrivalled in Westphalia and beyond.
This collection consists of more than 300,000 items. Presently, however, the museum can only present the visitors about five percent of its inventory. For secure preservation, these items have to be stored in safe depots. The museum is projecting an amply dimensioned exhibition building so that these hidden treasures can be put on show in the future.
As a state museum of popular art, the LWL Open-Air Museum in Detmold has to fulfil its public contract consisting in the main of preservation, restoration and research of the Westphalian culture of remembrance because the museum is the only place where this kind of work can be performed with due regard to overview and representativeness.
Our Documentation Department, dedicated to the registration and administration of the inventory, is currently developing a new EDP inventory system.
On special occasions we offer guided tours of our two central depots. Please inform and register.
